X-ray of the security system that stopped working before the Urda accident: almost one fall every two days
The LZB system, crucial for preventing train collisions, has failed 170 times this year, leading to significant safety concerns. On a recent incident, six trains were halted due to a LZB failure, resulting in a catastrophic collision between an AVE and a stationary Iryo train, causing numerous fatalities. The LZB system, which has been in use since the 1990s, is now seen as outdated compared to the newer ERTMS technology being implemented across Spain. Minister Óscar Puente stated that many of the LZB failures are due to external factors like vandalism and cable theft, rather than system malfunctions. The transition to ERTMS is expected to improve safety and reliability in the future.
