Rangel warns of risks of AI in electronic voting

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, highlighted the new challenges posed by artificial intelligence and external interference on the security and reliability of electronic voting. Speaking in London, he noted that while digitalization can facilitate voting for Portuguese citizens abroad, it also introduces risks regarding electoral process reliability. Rangel mentioned that the upcoming 2027 elections for the Council of Portuguese Communities could serve as a test for electronic voting to address these risks. He emphasized the importance of ensuring electoral security and reliability, despite acknowledging the benefits of such a system.
