Rangel: Government will never advocate for historical reparations

Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel stated that the government will not support historical reparations to former colonies, emphasizing reconciliation instead. During a parliamentary hearing on the 2027 State Budget, he condemned historical slavery but reiterated that reparations are not on the agenda. Rangel highlighted past actions by Portuguese governments aimed at reconciliation, such as the rehabilitation of historical sites in Mozambique and Cape Verde. The topic gained attention after former President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa acknowledged Portugal's colonial crimes and suggested reparations during the 50th anniversary of independence for African nations.
