Record at auction in Paris. Monumental "Irises" by Monet for 50 million euros
The painting, created between 1924 and 1925, depicts irises from Monet's garden and measures 159 by 180 cm. For over a century, it remained unseen publicly, known only through black-and-white photographs due to its owner Jeanne Schlumberger's reluctance to exhibit it. Before the auction, it was valued between 22 and 30 million euros, with Sotheby’s suggesting it could reach a record price. Public displays occurred only prior to the sale in New York and Hong Kong. The auction titled "Time Rediscovered" featured works from Schlumberger's collection, which she acquired directly from Monet's son, Michel. Another Monet piece, "Weeping Willow," was also offered during the Paris auction.
