2.5 percent interest on student loans not achievable, student union furious
Global interest rates have risen due to geopolitical tensions, affecting long-term student loans. The rate for former students will increase from 2.7% to 3.3%. Reducing it to 2.5%, as proposed by D66, VVD, and CDA, would cost an additional €120 million annually. Minister Letschert suggests alternatives like a fixed interest discount or a 'moving ceiling', but both could be more expensive than the allocated €40 million budget. The National Student Union (LSVb) expresses outrage, stating students are burdened with increasing debt. The Intercity Student Consultation (ISO) also voices disappointment over unmet promises from the coalition. Letschert will discuss budget solutions with the House of Representatives next week.
