2.5 percent interest on student loans fails, student union furious
Global interest rates have risen due to geopolitical tensions, affecting long-term student loans. The rate for former students will increase from 2.7% to 3.3%. Reducing it to the previously agreed maximum of 2.5% would cost an additional €120 million annually. Minister Letschert suggests alternatives like a fixed interest discount or a 'moving ceiling', but both could be more expensive than the allocated €40 million budget. The National Student Union expresses anger over the situation, stating students are burdened with rising rates and broken promises. Letschert will discuss budget solutions with the House of Representatives next week.
