Revolution in Czech criminal law? They want to punish 13-year-olds like adults

Youth crime rates are stable, but the nature of offenses is shifting towards violence, according to Lenka Bradaczova. The Czech Ministry of Justice supports lowering the age of criminal responsibility, particularly for serious crimes that could lead to life sentences. However, Bradaczova emphasizes that simply lowering the age is insufficient; the current juvenile rehabilitation system needs significant reform. She argues that children in difficult situations should not be housed with juvenile offenders. Bradaczova calls for coordinated reforms across justice, health, and education sectors. Currently, individuals under 15 cannot be prosecuted, but protective measures can be applied.
