The richest 8 million people emit more greenhouse gases than the 3.5 billion poorest people, says Oxfam

A report by Oxfam reveals that the wealthiest 0.1% of the global population causes more carbon pollution than nearly half of humanity combined. This elite group, comprising about 8 million individuals, emits more greenhouse gases than 3.5 billion of the poorest people. In Belgium, the richest 0.1% emits 14 times more CO2 than the average citizen. Oxfam highlights that the richest contribute significantly to climate crises while profiting from them. They are responsible for a fifth of global warming since 1990 and will cause an estimated 1.9 million additional heat-related deaths in the future. Oxfam urges world leaders to implement stricter measures against major polluters, including taxes on wealth and high-emission luxury goods.
