Robles warns at the UN that peace cannot be built with backs turned to women
Margarita Robles, Spain's Defense Minister, emphasized the crucial role of women in conflict resolution at the UN, advocating for increased female participation in military operations. She proposed a minimum of 5% female representation in armed forces and 15% in UN missions, highlighting the stagnation in achieving gender equality in peace processes. Robles expressed concern for Afghan women and girls, urging the international community to address their dire situation under Taliban rule. She underscored women's contributions to rebuilding war-torn societies and called for their involvement in peace negotiations. Robles also suggested enhancing gender perspectives in military education and creating a Special EU Representative for Women, Peace, and Security.
