Romanians tackle the problem of online disinformation
Since joining the EU in 2007, Romania's civil society has focused on anti-corruption and rule of law. Following the annulment of the December 2024 presidential election, far-right protests emerged, sparked by allegations of manipulation and Russian interference. Calin Georgescu, an ultranationalist candidate, initially led the vote but faced annulment due to irregularities. In May 2025, centrist Nicusor Dan won the presidency. The election highlighted online manipulation, prompting citizens to combat misinformation through digital platforms, notably the Facebook group "AI de noi," which has over 12,000 members dedicated to reporting fake accounts and misinformation. Fact-checking initiatives have also expanded significantly.
