Russian independent newspaper ceases to exist. "We did not die, they killed us"
In early September, Moscow authorities designated "Novaya Gazeta" as a "foreign agent," a legal tool used by the Kremlin to censor media. The editorial team announced the newspaper would cease operations on November 9, citing pressure from Russian authorities. Former editor Dmitry Muratov and current editor Sergey Sokolov met with staff in late October to discuss the closure, fearing surveillance. Sokolov stated that the government forced the editorial team to stop their activities, while Muratov criticized the constitutional ban on censorship, claiming their rights were violated.
