Over 80 times the area of Belgium: nature restoration is gaining momentum worldwide, with China as an example
Currently, 252 million hectares of nature are being restored globally, equivalent to over 80 times Belgium's area, according to a UN report. China leads with nearly half of this area, while progress in freshwater and marine ecosystems remains slow. The report highlights the importance of ecosystem restoration for biodiversity and climate change mitigation, noting that successful restoration can significantly reduce species extinction rates. Despite positive developments, many biodiversity goals are still lagging behind, prompting discussions on funding and feasibility at COP17 in Yerevan. The report serves as a hopeful note amidst challenging negotiations.
