Russia's last free newspaper 'Novaya Gazeta' closes as press freedom faces its swan song

Novaya Gazeta, a prominent independent newspaper in Moscow, announced its closure due to ongoing repression from the FSB. Editor Sergei Sokolov stated that the publication can no longer operate under constant threats and lack of resources. The newspaper, which had previously suspended operations in March 2022 following its opposition to the Ukraine invasion, will officially cease all activities on November 9. Although Novaya Gazeta Europe continues to operate, the original outlet's editorial team has been forced to adapt to severe restrictions, publishing limited content online and in small print runs.
