Russian-friendly Vucic concedes defeat to student protest movement in Serbian election
Aleksandar Vucic acknowledged his defeat in Serbia's parliamentary elections to a student-led protest movement, which is expected to secure a significant majority. The Students' List party, supported by the protests, is projected to win 135 to 140 seats, while Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party is anticipated to hold 105 seats. The protests, sparked by a tragic incident in 2024, have criticized Vucic's government for corruption. Vucic, who has been in power since 2014, previously resigned as president to run for prime minister. This election marks a significant political change in Serbia, with the highest voter turnout since 1992, potentially shifting the country away from Russian influence.
