Russia: Forced closure of the Kremlin-critical newspaper "Novaya Gazeta"

The Russian newspaper "Novaya Gazeta," known for its critical stance, announced its closure after over 30 years of operation. Editor Sergei Sokolov stated that the authorities forced the editorial team to cease operations. The newspaper, founded by Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov, faced increasing pressure, especially after the onset of the war in Ukraine. Despite halting domestic production, it continued to publish online. Muratov had previously been labeled a "foreign agent," which carries significant restrictions. The closure marks a significant loss for independent journalism in Russia.
