Sanctioned Russian energy giant secretly funded US gas project, NYT reports

Novatek, a major Russian LNG producer, has allegedly funded Polar LNG, a U.S. gas project, potentially breaching U.S. sanctions. This funding was revealed amid discussions between the U.S. and Russia regarding the Ukraine conflict. Former Polar LNG CEO John Riddle resigned after discovering the ties to Novatek and reported the issue to Trump administration officials. The funding was reportedly disguised as coming from a UAE company. Novatek is also negotiating to sell technology to Polar LNG, which was discussed with U.S. peace envoys and Putin. These dealings occur as U.S. support for Ukraine wanes, with Trump pursuing energy agreements with Russia, including a diesel purchase deal.
