Scientists alarmed by dozens of whale deaths along Argentina’s coast
A significant increase in whale deaths has been observed along Argentina's coast, particularly affecting southern right whales. Since July, over 300 whales, including calves and adults, have been reported dead, raising concerns among scientists. The deaths of calves are linked to a bacterium, while the cause for adult deaths is still under investigation, possibly related to harmful algal blooms. Authorities are conducting necropsies and environmental sampling to determine the causes. Despite the alarming mortality rates, the overall whale population in the region has been increasing since the late 1990s, with protections in place for the species.
