Drought devastates mushroom season in Trás-os-Montes
Climate change is negatively impacting the growth of edible mushroom species in northern Portugal due to dry conditions. Manuel Moredo, president of the Micológica A Pantorra association, noted that this year has been particularly poor for mushroom foraging, with high temperatures and lack of moisture hindering development. While some species may still appear, the overall yield is expected to be low, affecting both foragers and the mushroom tourism sector. Prices for mushrooms vary, but with minimal harvest expected, income for those relying on this activity will likely decrease significantly. The region has identified over 1,200 mushroom species, but this year’s conditions are atypical, limiting opportunities for enthusiasts and researchers alike.
