"Extreme drought" worries but floods can be "sudden"
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, acknowledged the government's concern over extreme drought conditions in northern Portugal, following months without rain. She emphasized the need for preparedness against sudden weather changes, including potential floods. Carvalho also addressed waste management issues, describing it as a significant challenge inherited by her ministry. The government is investing in the Terra+ program to improve waste management and reduce reliance on landfills. She highlighted the importance of collaboration with local authorities and universities to find effective waste treatment solutions, particularly in regions like the Algarve, where waste production is high.
