Sejm votes for increasing the sugar fee. Earlier, the president vetoed it.

On Thursday, the Polish Sejm approved an amendment to the public health law that increases the sugar tax rates on beverages. The bill, which received 233 votes in favor and 76 against, will now go to the Senate. The fixed rate for sugar content up to 5 grams per 100 ml will rise from 50 to 70 groszy per liter, while the variable rate for each gram above 5 grams will double from 5 to 10 groszy. The maximum tax per liter will increase from 1.20 PLN to 1.80 PLN, with a significant increase for caffeine or taurine content. The new regulations will also apply to highly sweetened fruit syrups and beverages with at least 20% juice. The changes are set to take effect on January 1, 2027. This proposal follows a previous veto by President Karol Nawrocki, who opposed tax increases, arguing they burden household budgets.
