Sint-Truiden establishes first natural burial site in Melveren

Sint-Truiden is developing its first natural burial site in Melveren, responding to the increasing demand for eco-friendly farewells. The site will feature biodegradable urns and no traditional gravestones, allowing nature to create lasting memories. Planting of trees and flowers will begin this autumn, with the first burials expected by mid-2027. The initiative aims to provide a serene space for remembrance while enhancing local biodiversity. Residents will be able to use the site for free, while non-residents will incur a fee. If successful, additional natural burial sites may be established in other cemeteries in Sint-Truiden.
