Where do the billion-dollar research funds come from?
Poland's academic sector is increasingly reliant on funding, with major universities in cities like Warsaw and Krakow receiving the bulk of resources. Between 2019 and 2024, approximately 29.4 billion PLN was allocated for research from various public sources. The National Science Centre (NCN) and the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) played significant roles in financing projects, with NCN funding over 12,600 projects worth nearly 9 billion PLN. Despite the concentration of resources in larger institutions, regional universities are gradually receiving support through various programs. The report highlights the need for smaller institutions to improve their grant acquisition capabilities and enhance collaboration with businesses to foster innovation and economic growth.
