Tracking through ads. It's about an Israeli company and Starlink users.
Researchers from TrendAI revealed that Discover-Tech was a major player in advertising auctions related to Starlink users, making numerous bids across over 100 countries. The automated ad auctions allow bidders to access user data, which can be combined with other information to track online activity. TrendAI initially referred to Discover-Tech as "Shadow-Earth-79" but later refrained from naming the company due to legal concerns. However, Citizen Lab and Confiant publicly identified Discover-Tech, accusing it of using ad auctions to gather user data. Following these findings, companies like Google and Comcast removed Discover-Tech from their advertising platforms. TrendAI also noted an unusual volume of bids from conflict zones, suggesting a tracking infrastructure rather than standard advertising practices. SpaceX and Discover-Tech did not respond to requests for comments.
