Locks on the Upper Scheldt will be drained for a renovation of 38 million euros: "Great impact on ships and companies"
The locks on the Boven-Schelde in Asper, Oudenaarde, and Kerkhove will undergo significant renovations, requiring periods of drying out. The Flemish Waterway states that the locks, built in 1920, are outdated and unable to handle larger vessels. A total investment of 38 million euros is planned for the renovations, which will include upgrades to mechanical components and remote operation capabilities. During the renovations, no vessels will be able to pass through the locks, impacting shipping routes and necessitating that businesses stockpile supplies. The first lock will be dried out in November 2026, with subsequent works scheduled through 2028.
