Small avocado growers’ strike cuts Mexican exports to the United States

Small avocado growers in Michoacán, Mexico, have initiated a strike demanding higher prices, leading to a significant reduction in exports to the U.S. The Union of Small Producers of Michoacán is advocating for a price increase to 45 pesos per kilogram, up from 13 pesos, citing deteriorating living conditions and unfair profit distribution. The strike has resulted in roadblocks and halted harvesting, with only about half of the expected shipments to the U.S. being fulfilled. The U.S. is a crucial market for Mexican avocados, accounting for 99% of exports. The situation has raised concerns about market access and the need for diversification in export destinations, as well as compliance with labor regulations under the new VELAGRO system.
