Death of a patient infected with the Shamonda virus. GIS issued a statement
The Polish Chief Sanitary Inspectorate reported the first human case of Shamonda virus in France, resulting in the patient's death. The patient had serious health issues, and while complications from the virus are suspected, the exact cause of death is under investigation. Authorities emphasize that the risk of an epidemic is low, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission. The infected individual was from Lyon and had a weakened immune system, increasing susceptibility to infections. The virus, previously found only in animals, was first isolated in Nigeria in 1965 and reached Europe in 2026. Polish health services are monitoring the situation closely, collaborating with international health organizations.
