South Africa tests 7.6-kilometre freight train in bid to break world record
Transnet, South Africa's state-owned transport company, has successfully tested the world's longest freight train, measuring 7.6 kilometers with 696 wagons. The train completed an 860-kilometer journey from Saldanha Bay to an iron ore mine on October 18, with empty wagons during the test. Power was supplied by electric and diesel locomotives positioned along the train. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 4.5 miles set in 2001 in Australia. Transnet claims this milestone enhances South Africa's rail freight network, although the record assertion is self-reported.
