Gasoline Golf to Mexico, electric for later. Wolfsburg awaits the future

Volkswagen is postponing the production of the electric Golf due to cost-cutting measures, while facing significant job cuts and operational losses. The Wolfsburg plant will focus on reducing expenses, with plans to shift gasoline Golf production to Mexico by 2027. Despite the challenges, Volkswagen maintains that the ID Golf will still be produced in Wolfsburg. The company reported a substantial operational loss of €5.9 billion in Q3, the largest since 2015, prompting a reevaluation of its strategies amidst declining sales in China. The Golf remains popular in Europe, ranking fifth in sales in 2025, but the brand must adapt to financial pressures.
