Statue of medieval writer Hendrik Van Veldeke in Hasselt gets a thorough cleaning
The statue of Hendrik Van Veldeke in Hasselt has undergone a thorough cleaning as part of a project by the Flemish government to restore heritage in public spaces. Van Veldeke, born in Hasselt, is recognized as one of the earliest Dutch-language writers, having composed works in the 12th century. The statue, created by sculptor Henri Holemans, was erected 98 years ago to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Van Veldeke's birth. The cleaning event was attended by descendants of printer Eugeen Leën, who initiated the statue's creation. The project 'Beeldschone Verhalen' aims to raise awareness of heritage and its historical significance, encouraging local communities to engage with their history. Minister of Heritage Ben Weyts emphasized the importance of maintaining these monuments amidst budget cuts in heritage sectors.
