Stanford’s plan to save the Cinque Terre’s seas from overtourism
The Gulf of La Spezia faces ecological threats due to human activities, particularly within 250 meters of the coastline. A study by ENEA highlights vulnerable marine habitats, including seagrass meadows and coral colonies, impacted by tourism and fishing. The research utilized a Habitat Risk Assessment model to identify risks and suggests conservation measures could significantly reduce habitat degradation. Implementing regulated moorings and enforcing existing laws could protect biodiversity. The findings may serve as a model for managing other Mediterranean coastal areas.
