"Construction madness." Germans are irritated by the expensive and delayed bypass. It has a Czech trace.
The German newspaper Bild criticized the construction of a section of the bypass in Pirna, Saxony, labeling it as a monument to traffic planners due to its high cost of 288.4 million euros. The project, which includes a bridge over the Gottleuba River built by Czech company Metrostav, has faced numerous delays and complications, including technical issues and the pandemic. Originally expected to be completed in 2022, the opening date is now uncertain. Local residents are eager for the bypass to alleviate traffic congestion in Pirna, which has a population of around 40,000. The costs have escalated significantly from initial estimates made in 1999, and the project has encountered various challenges, including geological issues and wildlife concerns.
