Study: Heat Summer 2026 was the deadliest in Europe so far

The summer of 2026 has been recorded as the deadliest heatwave in Europe, with over 50,000 estimated deaths due to extreme temperatures. Researchers attribute 65% of these fatalities directly to climate change. The study, conducted by British scientists, analyzed data from 854 urban areas across the EU, UK, Norway, and Switzerland, covering about 40% of the population in these regions. Germany reported approximately 16,000 heat-related deaths, while the UK saw around 4,500. The most severe impact occurred in June 2026, with temperatures averaging five degrees above normal. The findings highlight the urgent need for cities to adapt to rising temperatures through increased green spaces and improved healthcare.
