The number of pipe breaks in the country approaches one hundred thousand annually
The Water Coalition's study reveals that the number of pipe breaks in Hungary is nearing 100,000 annually, with no improvement in drinking water networks. The report highlights a significant increase in network failures and ongoing water loss, with 20% of treated water wasted. The aging infrastructure requires a 324-year renovation cycle, while the planned lifespan of pipes is only 50-100 years. The study attributes the current situation to reduced utility costs and suggests introducing a tiered water pricing system. Additionally, wastewater treatment plants are operating beyond capacity, leading to environmental concerns. The coalition emphasizes the urgent need for responsible water management and infrastructure investment.
