"Perhaps one day a suitable transport connection will be established towards Ferihegy" – an unprecedented tourist boom is promised for Budapest, but what will happen if it actually occurs?
According to Accor's recent analysis, demand for European accommodations could increase by a third over the next decade, translating to over 1.6 billion overnight stays by 2036. This growth is primarily driven by international travel, which may rise by 42%, compared to a 24% increase in domestic travel. Countries in Asia and the Middle East are becoming more accessible to European destinations due to rising living standards and improved transport links. Notably, Hungary is projected to see an 80% increase in tourist numbers. The report also highlights a significant rise in spending on accommodations, expected to grow from €825 billion in 2026 to €1.3 trillion, with business tourism expanding faster than leisure travel. Frank Reulla from Accor discussed these trends, emphasizing Budapest's evolving gastronomy scene and the need for balanced tourism management to avoid overcrowding.
