Caught in the act, a machine mowed down the protected reed bed of Lake Balaton over an area of one thousand square meters.
In Balatonberény, a protected reed area was illegally cleared by an excavator, confirmed by the local national park authority. A police investigation has been initiated after a public report led to the apprehension of the operator, who lacked permission. Approximately 1,000 square meters of a Natura 2000 site were destroyed, impacting local wildlife. The operator's client remains unknown, and the area was not visible from the road, making detection difficult. A marsh turtle, a protected species, was rescued during the incident. The park authority emphasized the prohibition of land vehicles in state-owned water bodies and increased monitoring due to low water levels.
