Thijs Wiersma (18) wants to skate and cycle for as long as possible: ‘I don't choose the sport, the sport chooses me’
Thijs Wiersma, an 18-year-old from Sint Nicolaasga, excels in both speed skating and cycling without specializing in either sport. He aims to prolong his dual career, believing that both sports enhance his performance. Wiersma has achieved significant milestones, including a junior world record in speed skating and a win at the Paris-Roubaix cycling race. Despite facing challenges, such as a disappointing performance at the World Cycling Championships and balancing studies in maritime technology, he remains committed to both sports. His parents support his passion, emphasizing enjoyment over pressure. Wiersma's unique training approach allows him to benefit from both disciplines, and he plans to pursue success in his final junior skating season and his first year in cycling.
