Tens of thousands of emergency buttons for the elderly will soon be defective due to the discontinuation of the 2G network
Many elderly individuals relying on emergency alarm buttons face risks as the 2G network they depend on will soon be discontinued. Research by EenVandaag indicates that between 30,000 and 80,000 mobile alarm systems, including senior phones and emergency buttons, operate on 2G networks. While some sellers are adjusting their advertisements, many of these systems remain available for purchase. Telecom providers are phasing out outdated 2G and 3G networks, with KPN set to discontinue its 2G service by the end of 2027. The ANBO seniors' association warns that the sudden failure of these systems could lead to life-threatening situations, urging users to check their devices and seek assistance if needed. They also call for government action to raise awareness.
