Leading game studio BioWare to close its doors after 31 years
BioWare, the renowned Canadian game studio known for titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, is shutting down due to disappointing results, leading to 400 job cuts. Founded in 1995, BioWare gained fame with RPGs, starting with Baldur's Gate in 1998. The studio became prominent in the early 2000s with hits like Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, which featured groundbreaking character relationships. After being acquired by EA in 2007, BioWare released several successful games, but recent titles like Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age: The Veilguard underperformed. EA's recent acquisition by a Saudi investment group and the need to reduce costs contributed to BioWare's closure. EA plans to focus on fewer large-scale games while still developing new titles in the Star Wars and Iron Man franchises.
