Trump called Libya a "shithole" country. Tripoli demands an apology
The Libyan Foreign Ministry rejected statements undermining the dignity of Libyans and their international standing. Both the internationally recognized government in Tripoli and Khalifa Haftar's forces condemned Trump's remarks, asserting Libya should not be used in U.S. election debates. Prime Minister Abd al-Hamid ad-Dubajba emphasized Libya's sovereignty and the need for respectful U.S. relations. He called for an end to offensive comments and highlighted the importance of partnership. Libya recently co-hosted U.S. military exercises, and the Libya Observer noted the need for respect towards the Libyan army. Libyan authorities demand public apologies from the U.S. administration, warning that such statements could harm bilateral relations and security cooperation. The U.S. has not yet responded to these demands.
