Trump wants to reach out to Putin to have the American pensioner imprisoned in Russia released
Donald Trump discussed the case of Stephen Hubbard, an American teacher imprisoned in Russia, during talks with President Putin. Hubbard was sentenced in 2024 for fighting alongside Ukrainians and has been in Russian custody since April 2022. Trump suggested that progress might be made regarding Hubbard's release, emphasizing that the U.S. government views his detention as unlawful. Hubbard, who moved to Ukraine in 2014, was contracted by the Ukrainian army and captured by Russian forces while serving as a mercenary. Trump's special envoy is set to negotiate with Russia soon.
