Turkey proposes candidate for UN Secretary-General

Turkey has nominated Feridun Sinirlioglu, the current OSCE Secretary-General, for the UN Secretary-General position. This nomination was communicated in a letter from Turkey's UN representative, Ahmet Yildiz, to the General Assembly and Security Council presidents. The decision follows a deadlock in the selection process, with no clear favorite emerging from the latest Security Council vote. Previous candidates faced vetoes from permanent members, and new contenders have entered the race. The next Secretary-General will need at least nine votes and no vetoes to be confirmed, with a push for a woman to lead the UN for the first time.
