Tourist paradise is deserted. Airlines are canceling flights
Tulum, once a popular tourist destination, is experiencing a significant decline in visitor numbers. In 2025, tourist visits dropped by 5.3%, with a further 8.6% decrease in early 2026. The archaeological sites saw a 30% reduction in visitors, and hotel occupancy fell to 63.7%. The new airport, opened in December 2023, served only 529,800 passengers in the first half of 2026, a 33% drop year-on-year. Airlines are cutting flights due to low demand, with Aeromexico and Volaris suspending services. Factors contributing to this decline include rising prices, restricted beach access, pollution, safety concerns, and high operational costs.
