EU takes a step back in rapprochement with Canada and leaves the country at the door of Europe

The EU has retracted the proposal for an 'associated member' status for Canada, opting instead for a closer partnership without full membership. This decision follows opposition from Germany and other member states, citing legal uncertainties. The revised approach aims to enhance cooperation on economic prosperity and security by 2027. The summit in Montreal will focus on launching the 'Alliance for the Future' to strengthen economic and strategic ties, amidst Canada's efforts to diversify its economic relations away from the US. The EU-Canada trade relationship has significantly grown since the implementation of the CETA agreement in 2017.
