Ukraine seeks a way out of dependence on the USA. The EU has been building an alternative to Starlink for years
As tensions rise between the US and Ukraine, Kyiv is increasingly looking for alternatives to American support, with Europe expected to play a significant role. The EU is developing its own satellite infrastructure to reduce reliance on US systems like Starlink. Ukraine has faced satellite connectivity issues affecting military operations, reportedly due to restrictions imposed by SpaceX's Elon Musk, which he later attributed to the White House. Meanwhile, the EU's IRIS² satellite network aims to enhance security and communication, with initial services expected by 2029. In the interim, the EU plans to utilize the GOVSATCOM system for secure connections, while negotiations with Ukraine are ongoing.
