Umbria approves law on medically assisted suicide

Umbria has become the fifth Italian region to legalize medically assisted suicide, following a citizens' initiative bill. The Legislative Assembly's approval was celebrated with applause, although President Stefania Proietti abstained from voting. This law allows terminally ill patients to self-administer a lethal drug. Veneto recently joined the ranks of regions regulating end-of-life situations, alongside Tuscany, Sardinia, and Emilia-Romagna. The Luca Coscioni Association has facilitated assisted suicides since a 2019 supreme court ruling deemed it legal under specific conditions, prompting calls for national legislation, which has yet to materialize.
