A panoramic view of the intellectual journey of Averroes, an essential medieval Arab philosopher
The first complete French translation of Averroës' Grand Commentaire on Aristotle's "De l’âme" has been released, marking a significant milestone in philosophical history. This work, previously known only through a Latin version by Michael Scot, is crucial for understanding how the West interpreted Aristotle. Averroës, a prominent Muslim philosopher from Cordoba, sought to reconcile revealed truths with metaphysics and science, similar to his contemporaries like Maimonides and later Thomas Aquinas. The simultaneous publication of Averroës' early works under the title De l’âme provides a comprehensive view of his intellectual journey, showcasing his contributions beyond mere paraphrase of ancient texts.
