University discovers protein that helps control cancer

A research team from the University of Coimbra has discovered a new variant of the p53 protein, named Delta246p53, which plays a crucial role in cellular aging and cancer control. This variant induces cellular senescence and inhibits tumor formation. The study suggests that if Delta246p53 expression can be limited to cells at risk of oncogenic transformation, it may lead to increased lifespan while enhancing cancer defense. The research involved collaboration with institutions from Japan and Italy, highlighting the potential for targeted interventions against aging and cancer-related issues.
