He saved 17 people, fell ill, and had to leave the police. He recounted the day that changed his life
On August 8-9, 2025, police officer Łukasz Schön rescued 17 people from a burning building in Chorzów but suffered severe brain hypoxia, leading to a rare neurological condition. He was declared unfit for duty in August 2026 and had to leave the police force. Despite his struggles with post-traumatic stress and physical symptoms, he received a pension and additional support from the government. Schön recalls the chaotic night of the fire, where he instinctively rushed into the building to save lives, facing life-threatening situations. Now, he is focused on rebuilding his life and finding fulfillment beyond his police identity, supported by his family and a foundation.
