Abortion laws. The Sejm has made a decision
The Polish parliament voted on amendments to the Penal Code regarding abortion, with 217 in favor and 213 against. The proposal aims to partially decriminalize abortion by limiting criminal liability for terminating a pregnancy with the woman's consent. Additionally, a law allowing abortion in cases of severe fetal defects received support from 233 lawmakers. These legislative efforts seek to reverse the Constitutional Tribunal's 2020 ruling that deemed certain abortion grounds unconstitutional. Current laws permit abortion only in cases threatening the woman's life or health or following a crime, while the grounds for severe fetal impairment have been banned since January 2021, leading to nationwide protests.
