Value of properties held by families rises nearly 50% in 15 years says BdP

The value of properties owned by Portuguese families rose nearly 50% from 2010 to 2025, reaching €708 billion, while their share of total assets decreased from 54% to 52%. This increase is attributed to property appreciation, with capital investments and deposits also gaining significance. In 2025, properties accounted for about 74% of assets for families below the median wealth, but less than 40% for the wealthiest 10%. The latter group had a higher proportion of capital investments compared to deposits, indicating greater financial diversification. Housing loans remained the primary debt component across all wealth groups, although their share of total liabilities decreased from 82% to 77%.
